Maybe some of you have noticed that there haven’t been any updates to WP Vault (or maybe no one noticed). No, I have not abandoned the development of the plug in. However, another project of mine has been taking the most of free time.

I have been migrating to Linux from Windows.

It was a good opportunity. I had just built myself a powerful desktop PC (Intel Quadcore, 4GB RAM, nVidia 8800GT, etc). But the thing about building a PC is that I get no copy of OS bundled. So my choice was to:

  1. Install my existing copy of XP
  2. Spend $$$ for Vista
  3. Go to free solution

I’ve heard so many bad things about Vista being resource hog and is slower than XP. I can deal with Vista using the resources that’s available, but being slower than XP? That, I couldn’t get over.

So stick with XP? That’s the safest option. I would’ve gone this route…
But my co-worker is a Linux advocate, and he has continuously nudged me to try Linux. I told him a lot of maybes. I had a glimpse of Linux experience and remember the difficulty. Of course, this is something like 10 years ago, and many things change in 10 years, particularly in computing.

And that was evident when he showed off the beautiful Compiz 3D desktop. Wow, amazing.

The eye candy was nice, but that wasn’t going to be the only reason for switching to Linux.

But in term of security, reliability, stability, and performance, it seemed quite ready. If I need to run few things I need from the Windows world, I’d use a virtual machine. And I don’t play a lot of games on PC.

So the time seems right. Another potential Vista user avoiding it (I honestly had a high hope). I guess it’s about time another OS gives Microsoft some solid competition, the same way Firefox did to IE.
